Alberta TrailNet Society receives numerous requests for maps and other information that would assist Albertans and visitors to the province in accessing and experiencing the variety of trail experiences available throughout the province. One of the challenges in responding to such requests is the lack of adequate map and information resources, particularly for areas beyond the mountain park region. There is also a need to identify approved trails and understand patterns and impacts of unmanaged access on crown land. This information will assist in developing a provincial trail database that supports future land management activities and recreational access planning and design. Recognizing the growing need for this information, Alberta TrailNet consulted with other stakeholders regarding initiating a provincial trail map project with the goal of eventually completing a series of provincial maps that would locate approved trails and supporting services and information. A project partnership including Alberta TrailNet Society, Alberta Off Highway Vehicle Association, Alberta Snowmobile Association, Alberta Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture, and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development was formed to take this initiative forward. TrailNet has provided project management and leadership to the project. The initial focus was on developing and testing a prototype map targeted on a pilot project area in northeastern Alberta. Field work commenced over the summer of 2006 and has been ongoing. Valuable assistance came from local trail groups, users, businesses, and municipalities. Through this successful partnership we have now completed the Northeast Alberta Trail Map which shows the officially approved trails inWe are pleased to be able to share this map which is the first of its kind in the province with Albertans and visitors.
To promote a trail network, including the Trans Canada Trail, connecting all Albertans.
