Board Treasurer

Alberta TrailNet Society (ATN) is seeking a board member interested in recreational trail development who would fill the position of Board Treasurer. The position is voluntary with no remuneration.

The organization: Alberta TrailNet Society is Alberta’s provincial trail council, a non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to support the ongoing development of Alberta’s provincial trail network. This includes responsibility to help implement the 2,987 km of the Trans Canada Trail in Alberta. TrailNet works with trail supporters, operators, provincial trail user associations, municipalities and the provincial government to support trail projects throughout Alberta. Treasurer responsibilities include:
· Serve on the Executive Committee
· Chair the Finance Committee
· Present regular financial reports to the board
· Arrange for annual audit of the books
· Oversee ATN insurance and staff benefits policies and staff/contractor payments
· Act as signing officer, along with another officer of ATN or the Executive Director, for cheques and other documents

The Treasurer works with the Society’s accountant/book keeper to:
· Manage investment of funds available
· Oversee individual grants to and from ATN and reporting
· Oversee planning (General Manager) of ATN casino and reporting to AB Lotteries
· Ensure the accuracy and retention of financial records and reports
· Prepare Registered Charity and GST returns

The Treasurer also works with the Society’s Executive Director to:
· Oversee the assets and liabilities of ATN including real property
· Review and approve contracts, land sales, lease and crossing agreements
· Oversee project based financial activity and reporting
· Develop the Three Year Plan and Annual Report

Qualifications: financial or related experience working in mid-to large sized organization(s) and an interest and commitment to outdoor recreation through public trails. Understanding of public non-profits board function helpful.

Time commitment: approximately 20 hours per month including bi-monthly board meetings and an AGM.

Preferred location: Edmonton or Calgary area
